EU AI Act Article 4 check: free AI literacy self-assessment
Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires organisations that use AI to take measures supporting their staff's AI literacy. Regulation (EU) 2026/1744, in force since 27 July 2026, turned it into an obligation of effort. It still binds every deployer, with national supervision since 3 August 2026.

What does the Article 4 check measure?
- Know your exposure: do you know which AI systems are in scope, your role under the Act, and that the obligation already applies?
- Train the right people, the right way: are the right people receiving role-specific, risk-based AI literacy measures?
- Make it count and legally sound: does the training cover real risks and the legal framework, and connect to governance?
- Prove it and keep it alive: can you evidence what you did, and keep it current as tools, teams and the law evolve?
What do the Red, Amber and Green verdicts mean?
- Red, high exposure: significant gaps against the Article 4 AI-literacy duty.
- Amber, partial readiness: foundations exist, but gaps remain, most often in documentation, role-specific depth and governance.
- Green, strong position: the obligation is ongoing, so keep your inventory, training and evidence current as tools, teams and guidance evolve.
